EASY WORKFLOW WITH BUTTERY LUTs
In this color grading video tutorial you can see how easy it is to use our BUTTERY LUTs. Sometimes people ask us if they need to do what’s called CST (color space transform) or other crazy things. The reality is that you don’t need to do much other than apply the LUT by following a super simple workflow. Lately “color space transform” has been very trendy on Youtube, but after working in color grading for more than 10 years, we can assure that you could keep things extremely simple and save a lot of time. Of course everything starts with getting the perfect exposure (possibly using false colors or zebras) so you can get the best possible image while filming. After that, simply create a two nodes structure in the color grading tab of DaVinci Resolve. Apply the BUTTERY LUT of your choice on the second node and use the first node (or the RAW tab) to do your basic adjustments like white balance, tint and contrast until you are happy with the image. That’s it.
Here is a written summary of the video tutorial in case you are not able to watch it:
Simplified DaVinci Resolve Color Grading Workflow with BUTTERY LUTs
1. Import & Organize
Create bins to organize your footage.
Label shots and sync audio if needed.
Keep the default DaVinci settings.
2. Color Grading tab
Create two nodes: Apply BUTTERY LUT of your choice on the second node.
White Balance/Contrast / Exposure: Use the 3 wheels (or RAW tab) to adjust highlights, midtones, shadows, white balance and tint on the first node until you are happy with the image.
Use parade and waveform scopes to ensure accuracy.
3. Skin Tones
Use vectorscope to monitor skin tones — keep them along the skin tone line.
4. Secondaries & Isolation
Create power windows for faces or key areas.
Use qualifiers (HSL) to isolate colors like sky, foliage, clothing, etc.
5. Look Development
Apply a creative LUT (Look-Up Table)
Keep LUTs on a separate node to control intensity easily.
Add film grain or halation if desired.
6. Shot Matching
Use the split screen comparison tool to match shots side by side.
Match exposure and color tone across the whole scene.
7. Delivery
Check render settings (format, codec, resolution) before exporting.
Key Principles From the Video:
Keep it simple: Don’t overcomplicate with too many nodes or adjustments.
Work in order: From technical correction → creative enhancement.
